About El Cordova Hotel

El Cordova stands at 1351 Orange Avenue, directly opposite the Hotel del Coronado and a short walk from the beach. It was built in 1902 as a mansion for Elisha Babcock — the developer behind the Del itself — and converted in 1930 into a Spanish village hotel, which is essentially what it remains: tiled courtyards, a Mediterranean garden, and a swimming pool tucked in behind. Miguel’s Cocina and the Brigantine Seafood open onto the courtyard, so the ground floor has the feel of a small plaza rather than a lobby. Many of the rooms and apartment-style suites have kitchens, which makes it a practical choice for a family or a longer stay in a town where eating out three times a day adds up quickly.From San Diego International the drive is about eight miles over the Coronado Bridge, normally 15 to 20 minutes. Orange Avenue is the consideration: it is Coronado’s main street, it slows to a crawl on summer weekends, and there is no hotel parking lot of the usual kind — arriving and unloading in front of a busy shopping street with a full car is the awkward part of this trip, not the drive itself. The return to the airport is worth booking in advance too, since Coronado is one of the harder places in the county to summon a car from at short notice, particularly early in the morning.
