Why people drive from San Diego to LAX instead of flying
There is a short flight from San Diego to LAX, and on paper it takes 55 minutes. In practice it rarely beats the drive. You need to be at San Diego International around ninety minutes early, clear security, sit through boarding, and then land at a remote LAX gate and walk — often between terminals — to reach your connection. Door to door it is usually four hours or more, and any delay on that first leg puts the connection at risk with no way to recover.
The drive is a known quantity. You leave when you choose, your luggage stays in the vehicle with you, and you are dropped at your departure terminal having cleared no security at all. For a group of two or more it is also cheaper than buying the same number of connecting seats.
What the San Diego to LAX drive is actually like
The route runs north on Interstate 5 through Camp Pendleton and Orange County, then joins the 405 through the South Bay before dropping onto Century Boulevard at LAX. It is a straightforward drive with two well-known pinch points, and both are about timing rather than distance.
The Orange County stretch between San Clemente and Irvine is slow on weekday mornings and again from mid-afternoon. The 405 approaching LAX is at its worst from roughly 7am to 10am and from 3pm onward on weekdays. Early Sunday mornings are the clearest run of the week; Friday afternoons are the slowest.
How much time to allow. For a domestic departure we normally collect you five to five and a half hours before your flight. For an international departure, six hours. That is deliberately generous — it absorbs a bad traffic day without forcing you to rush, and if the road is clear you wait comfortably in the terminal rather than anxiously on the freeway. Where we meet you at LAX
This is the part of the trip most people underestimate, and it is where a private car earns its price.
Since 2019, taxis and standard Uber and Lyft rides have not been allowed to collect passengers at the LAX terminals. They must use the LAX-it lot beside Terminal 1, which means leaving the terminal, queuing for a shuttle bus, riding it around the loop with your luggage, and queuing again at the other end. At busy times that alone runs half an hour or more.
Limousines and town cars are exempt. Los Angeles World Airports allows pre-arranged limousine and private car services to collect passengers at the outer curb on the lower level, directly outside baggage claim. So when you book with us you walk out of your terminal and your car is there — no shuttle, no lot, no second queue. The same rule applies on arrival: we drop you at your departure door on the upper level.

Coming back from LAX
The return leg is worth booking at the same time.
