USS Midway Museum Guide: Tickets, Parking and Getting There

Aircraft carrier museum moored on the downtown San Diego waterfront

The USS Midway Museum is San Diego’s aircraft carrier museum, moored on the downtown waterfront at 910 N. Harbor Drive. It is one of the most visited sights in the city, and for good reason: you walk the hangar deck, climb to the flight deck among restored aircraft and look down on the bay from the ship’s island. This guide covers hours, tickets, parking at Navy Pier, how long to plan and how to get there without the parking hassle, written from the view of chauffeurs who drop visitors at the pier every week.

Quick answer: the USS Midway Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm (last entry 4pm; closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). Plan at least 4 to 5 hours. It sits on Navy Pier, about 2 to 3 miles from San Diego Airport, which is often a 10-minute drive. Parking on the pier fills up fast in summer, so a drop-off on North Harbor Drive is the easiest way in.

USS Midway Museum tickets

Tickets are sold on the museum’s website and at the ticket booth. Buying online is a few dollars cheaper and lets you walk straight to the entrance. At the time of writing, the museum lists these general admission prices:

  • Adults (13 and older): $39 online, $41 at the door
  • Youth (ages 4 to 12): $29 online, $31 at the door
  • Veterans with ID: $26
  • Children 3 and under: free
  • Active-duty military and reservists with valid ID: free

Prices can change, so check the museum’s site before you go. A few extras cost more, such as the flight simulators and the virtual reality ride (about $10 each per person). Everything else on the main tour is included.

What to see on the USS Midway

The ship is big. A simple plan: start on the hangar deck, go below, then finish on the flight deck.

Hangar deck

You come aboard on the hangar deck. This is where aircraft were stored and repaired at sea. Today it holds aircraft, exhibits, the café and the gift shop. A short film in the theater tells the story of the Battle of Midway, the battle the ship is named for.

Below decks

Follow the audio tour down to see how thousands of sailors lived. You pass berthing spaces, the galley, the engine room area and offices. The passages are narrow and some routes use steep ladders, so take your time.

Flight deck

The flight deck is the highlight for most people. It is lined with restored jets and helicopters, and the view of the bay, Coronado and the downtown skyline is wide open. Docents give regular talks here about catapult launches and arrested landings.

The island tour

The island is the tower on the flight deck. Docents lead groups up to the bridge and flight control areas. Space is limited, and on busy days the line can close as early as 3:30pm. If the island is a must for you, do it before lunch.

How long to spend at the Midway

The museum suggests at least 4 to 5 hours. In our experience that is right for a first visit with the audio tour and a few docent talks. Families with young children often do 3 hours and leave happy.

  • Quick visit (2 to 3 hours): hangar deck, flight deck and the film
  • Full visit (4 to 5 hours): add below decks, the island tour and a docent talk
  • Waterfront day (6 hours or more): add lunch and a walk along the Embarcadero

USS Midway Museum parking

Parking is the part of the visit most people ask us about. The main lot is on Navy Pier itself, right beside the ship. It is owned by the Port of San Diego and run by Ace Parking. It is for passenger vehicles only.

  • Rates: the museum lists $20 for up to six hours, $25 for over six hours and $30 on special event days. Rates are set by the operator and the Port and can change.
  • Summer: the museum notes that parking is limited and early arrival is encouraged.
  • Other options: an underground public garage across Harbor Drive, metered street spaces with 2 to 3 hour limits, and B Street Pier parking on days with no cruise ship in port.
  • Accessible parking: front-row accessible spaces on Navy Pier are first come, first served.
  • Large vehicles: anything over 18 feet long is not allowed on Navy Pier.

Street meters run out before a full visit is over, and the pier lot can be full by late morning on summer weekends and holidays.

Getting to the USS Midway

The Midway is one of the easiest major sights in San Diego to reach. It sits on North Harbor Drive, the same road that runs from the airport along the bay into downtown.

Private SUV drop-offAbout 10 minutes from the airportDoor to door, no parking to find, pickup when you are done
Drive and park10 minutes plus parkingPier lot can fill up; meters have time limits
TaxiAbout 10 minutes from the airportMetered fare; finding one for the return depends on the day
Bus and trolley30 minutes or moreAirport bus or trolley to downtown, then a walk to the pier
Walk from downtown hotels5 to 25 minutesPleasant along the Embarcadero; tiring with kids at the end of the day

From San Diego Airport

The museum is only about 2 to 3 miles from the airport. With a short layover, an early arrival or a late flight out, you can fit in a visit. Your chauffeur meets you at the curb outside arrivals, or inside at baggage claim with Meet & Greet (+$30). Bags stay locked in the SUV while you tour, then you head on to your hotel. See our San Diego airport car service.

From downtown and Harbor Drive hotels

Several big bayfront hotels are close by, including the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina and the Hilton Bayfront. From the Hyatt it is a short walk. From the Hilton Bayfront or Little Italy, a ride saves tired legs, especially on the way back.

Drop-off tip from our chauffeurs

We drop you at the entrance to Navy Pier on North Harbor Drive, a short walk from the ticket booth. Groups and buses can unload near the ticket office but cannot wait on the pier, so we plan the pickup point and time with you before you go aboard.

Visiting with kids

The Midway is very family-friendly. Children can sit in some cockpits, and the flight deck gives them space to move. A few tips:

  • Ask about the family audio tour. Kids who finish the activity sheets can earn Junior Pilot wings from a docent.
  • The flight simulators have height rules (at least 42 inches with an adult), so check before you promise a ride.
  • Strollers are allowed on board, but below-deck routes include ladders, so a baby carrier helps.
  • Outside food and drinks are not allowed, and every bag is checked before boarding.
  • Need car seats for the ride? We fit child seats for $20 each, up to two per vehicle.

Accessibility

Elevators connect Navy Pier with the hangar deck, the hangar deck with the flight deck, and the hangar deck with the deck below. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are on the hangar and flight decks, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free, first come, first served. Some areas, such as the island and parts of below decks, are reached by ladders; video kiosks show what those spaces look like. Trained service animals are welcome; pets are not.

Nearby: combine the Midway with the Embarcadero

The Midway sits in the middle of San Diego’s waterfront. It is easy to build a full day around it:

  • Tuna Harbor Park: right next to Navy Pier, with the large “Embracing Peace” sailor-and-nurse statue and bay views.
  • Seaport Village: shops and casual places to eat, a short walk south along the water.
  • The Embarcadero promenade: a flat bayside walk north toward the Maritime Museum of San Diego, the city’s other ship museum, with historic vessels you can board.
  • Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy: a few minutes by car for dinner after your visit.

For a day like this, an hourly booking works well. Your chauffeur waits nearby, picks you up when you are ready and takes you on to the next stop. Hourly trips have a 3-hour minimum. Book an hourly SUV or read about our chauffeur service in San Diego.

Best time to visit the USS Midway

  • Arrive at opening. The first hour is the quietest, and the island tour lines are short.
  • Weekdays beat weekends, especially outside summer and school holidays.
  • Fall, winter and spring are mild and less crowded. Summer is busy and parking is tight.
  • Cruise ship days bring more people to the waterfront and less parking at B Street Pier.
  • Bring layers. The flight deck can be windy and cool even when downtown feels warm.
